Which Claude certification should you take?

There are four Claude certifications today — Claude Certified Associate — Foundations, Claude Certified Developer — Foundations, Claude Certified Architect — Foundations, and Claude Certified Architect — Professional. Anthropic organizes the whole program around three roles: Associate, Developer, and Architect. Quick read: if you build with the API or Claude Code day to day, that's Developer; if you design solutions and integrations, that's Architect (Foundations first is the common path, though Professional has no formal prerequisite); if you're starting out or in a non-technical role, that's Associate.

What Anthropic actually requires between them
- The only documented prerequisite anywhere in the program is partner eligibility — a partner email on a recognized company domain. Holding one certification is not a requirement for sitting another.
- On the Architect pair specifically, Anthropic is direct: “there's no formal prerequisite, so you can take Professional without holding Foundations,” and Foundations does not convert or upgrade to Professional automatically.
- The FAQ says nothing about an order between Associate, Developer — Foundations and Architect — Foundations. We're not inventing one — there is no official recommended path across those three.
Associate — Foundations: what it covers
Seven domains, from the official exam guide v1.0 — the heaviest is Output Evaluation and Validation at 21%. It's the only one of the four certifications that does not count toward a company's Partner Network status.

Five domains — the same blueprint the format guide covers in depth. By far the heaviest: Agents & agentic loop at 27%, with the top two domains alone worth nearly half the exam.

Which one to choose, by profile

- Build with the API or Claude Code day to day? → Developer — Foundations.
- Design solutions, own integration decisions, or lead architecture? → Architect — Foundations first, then Architect — Professional once you have the experience — there's no formal prerequisite between them.
- Just starting out, or in a non-technical role (product, support, technical sales)? → Associate — Foundations.
- Need the certification to count toward your employer's Partner Network tier, not just your own resume? Associate does not count — Developer — Foundations, Architect — Foundations and Architect — Professional do.
FAQ
What's the difference between Claude Certified Associate and Claude Certified Developer — Foundations?
Associate — Foundations is the broadest, least technical role in the program (7 domains at 14/21/12/16/12/15/10%) and does not count toward a company's Partner Network status. Developer — Foundations is for people who build with the API or Claude Code day to day, has 8 domains dominated by Applications and Integration (33.1%), and does count toward Partner Network.
Do I need Architect — Foundations before Architect — Professional?
No. Anthropic states there's no formal prerequisite between them — you can take Professional without holding Foundations. Foundations also doesn't automatically become Professional: they're separate certifications with separate exams.
Which Claude certification counts toward my company's Partner Network status?
Developer — Foundations, Architect — Foundations and Architect — Professional count. Claude Certified Associate — Foundations does not count toward that status.
Can I take more than one Claude certification?
Nothing stops you technically — but the FAQ doesn't recommend an order or a bundle across them. Taking more than one is your call, not a path Anthropic designed.
