Claude Certified Associate — Foundations (CCAO-F)

What CCAO-F is, and who it is for

Anthropic organizes the program around three roles — Associate, Developer and Architect. Associate is the foundations-level exam of the first, and at $99 it is the least expensive way into the program.

It is worth being precise about the audience, because the FAQ is not: Anthropic publishes no prerequisites and no target audience for this exam. There is no formal requirement to hold it before any other certification, and nothing stops a developer or an architect from sitting it first. What follows is our reading of the blueprint, not Anthropic's guidance.

• The domains reward using Claude well — prompting, judging the output, picking the right product and model, integrating it into a workflow — rather than writing code against the API.
• Only one of the seven domains is troubleshooting and optimization, and none is API surface, SDKs or infrastructure. That is what separates it from Developer — Foundations.
• If you are in a non-engineering role and want the program's credential without a code-heavy blueprint, this is the exam whose weights match that.

What it costs, and what sitting it looks like

• $99 per attempt, in USD, before any partner-tier discount. Select, Preferred and Global Premier tiers get 50% off, and Global Premier pays nothing at all through 31 August 2026.
• 120 minutes to answer, with roughly 135 minutes of total seat time once check-in, instructions and the post-exam survey are counted.
• Scored on a scale of 100 to 1,000, with 720 the minimum to pass — the same cut as the other three certifications.
• English only, closed book, delivered by Pearson either online with a proctor or at a test center.
• Question types are multiple choice and scenario-based multiple response.

The seven domains and their official weights

These are the official exam-guide v1.0 blueprint weights — they are our own product data, recorded when we built the question bank against that guide, not a figure from the FAQ above.

What the weights change about studying

Seven domains invites an even split, and an even split is the most common way to prepare inefficiently for this exam. Three domains — Output Evaluation and Validation (21%), Workflow Integration and Solution Design (16%) and Governance, Risk, and Responsible Use (15%) — are 52% of the exam between them. The lightest, Troubleshooting and Optimization, is 10%.

The heaviest domain is also the one people under-prepare, because it is the least like studying. Output Evaluation and Validation is not about knowing what Claude can do; it is about judging whether a given output is actually right, and saying why. That is a skill you build by evaluating outputs, not by reading about evaluation.

On a 720 cut, weighting your practice instead of splitting it evenly is worth several questions — and several questions is the whole margin. It also means readiness is not “I finished the material”: a weak 21% domain cannot be rescued by a strong 10% one, which is why mastery is worth tracking per domain rather than as one percentage.

What CCAO-F does not get you

This is the one asymmetry in the program worth knowing before you spend the $99, and it is easy to miss because the other three behave the same way as each other.

Associate is the only one of the four certifications that does not count toward Partner Network eligibility. Developer — Foundations, Architect — Foundations and Architect — Professional all do. If your reason for sitting an exam is to move your organization's partner status, this is not the exam that does it; if your reason is your own credential, that distinction costs you nothing.

Eligibility, retakes and how long it lasts

• Eligibility: certification is available to people at Claude Partner Network organizations, and registration requires a partner email address on a recognized company domain. Personal email addresses will not work.
• Registration: you register and pay in Anthropic Partner Academy, then receive an email with a link to Pearson, where you log in and schedule the appointment yourself.
• Retakes: up to 4 attempts per rolling 12 months, with waits of 14 days after the first failure, 30 days after the second and 90 days after the third.
• Validity: the certification is valid for 12 months from the date you earn it. On-time renewal is a free, non-proctored assessment rather than a second paid exam.
